Netscape Navigator is the Best Internet Browser in the World.
- No One Ever -
It's not about the biggest site. It's not about the most animated site. It's about the right site.
My path to digital was a little later than usual. In the mid-late 90s the practice area in which I was working saw the website as another touchpoint of the brand, but the early technology wasn’t there to capture that experience other than through simple UX/UI. There weren’t that many immersive digital experiences. It was used as a tool. We did it, it looked the part, clients loved it. But really, let's face it, most of it was brochureware. When I was asked to do animated sites they were in Flash and action script, but were more decoration than integral to the site’s functionality. I don’t even think these sites will work anymore with current browsers.
As I worked on larger sitemaps, I started to notice how my experience in environmental and spatial and physical wayfinding, had very similar user patterns with how the space is navigated in digital environments. The use of a clear orientation system, the employment of landmarks, taxonomy of information delivered at the right time, the Theseus thread. So when interviewers would say "oh, you don’t do digital", I’d respond with "I do people, brands, spaces, and places".
The digital projects displayed here definitely have more of a functional slant - in that they are not over adorned with bells and whistles, and a myriad of Ohh and Ahhh animations (who needs that when users are looking at their bank account), but what they do exhibit is a highly considered architecture, economic taxonomy of information, and an approach we would use in retail design called ‘clear line of sight’, allowing users to find what they need intuitively and quickly without a half dozen clicks.
